Morgan Spurlock’s Warrior Poets and LeBron James’ and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment announced their partnership for the upcoming powerful docu-series that will chronicle the incredible journey as LeBron James launches a new public school dedicated to supporting at-risk children in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
This series will explore the challenges, triumphs, and life-changing impact of the LeBron James Family Foundation’s trailblazing journey to open the “I Promise School” that focuses on inner-city students in danger of falling through the cracks.
The docu-series will chronicle the first year trials of working within the local public school system to build a unique educational environment for children who are falling behind and fighting uphill battles every day.
The series will also highlight the dedicated educators, mentors, and community partners committed to establishing a new approach to education from an early stage and creating an innovative curriculum that not only supports its students, but their entire families as well.
Over the course of the series, the LeBron James Family Foundation’s “We Are Family” philosophy will be brought to life in every phase of the school’s creation as it supports its students through graduation and beyond and brings their families along to create real, generational, community-wide change.

“Being able to create this school to specifically meet the needs of these kids and their families means everything to me. There are so many kids and families struggling, and we want this school to be a safe, positive place that helps them stay on the right track to earning their educations.” – LeBron James.
“We believe we’re changing the mold with the I Promise School, and we’re excited to have that story be told by people who understand the importance of what we’re trying to accomplish,” LeBron James said.
“This is exactly the type of powerful, engaging, and uplifting story SpringHill Entertainment was created to tell,” said Maverick Carter, SpringHill Entertainment’s CEO. “To have such an acclaimed filmmaker like Morgan Spurlock as passionate about this project as we are really highlights the power of the life-changing work that’s happening in Akron. We hope this story will touch people in a way that inspires action in their own communities as well.”
The series will follow along as the LeBron James Family Foundation partners with the Akron Public Schools in LeBron’s latest effort to improve lives in his community.
This partnership will build upon the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar’s education initiatives that have supported more than 1,200 students – a number that increases each school year as the program takes on a new class – with resources, mentorship, career exploration experiences, and the opportunity to earn full, four-year college scholarships.
“What LeBron has accomplished on the court pales in comparison to the lasting effects he is having on the young people of Akron,” said Morgan Spurlock. “I am honored to be able to share this journey with him, as well as with parents, fans and teachers around the world.”
Principal photography will begin shortly in Akron, Ohio.
