Pastor Troy and A Doctor From U of F Want to Try To Heal Racial Divide In Florida

A recent graduate of the University of Florida and a veteran rapper are hoping to heal growing racial divisions in the state of Florida.

Over the past several years, the issue of police brutality has been shoved into the spotlight thanks to high-profile killings of unarmed African-Americans like Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and in Florida, Trayvon Martin.
A new article by the Tampa Bay Times just revealed that African-Americans or more likely to be shot at the hands of police, even though whites outnumber them 3 to 1 in the state.
To make matters worse, the study found that African-Americans were twice as likely to be shot while pulled over for a traffic violation, a petty crime and in some cases – for nothing at all – in Florida.
Atlanta rapper Pastor Troy has coupled with a recent University of Florida grad named Dr. Micah Johnson, to do something about the increasing racial disparity in the state.
Dr. Johnson is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at U of F and a fan of hip-hop music.
Pastor Troy and Dr. Johnson are associating with several student organizations, while joining a student-run nonprofit called Friendly Neighbors, to host a concert called “Best of Both Worlds.”
“Many of our community members and neighbors feel that our community is becoming increasingly more segregated, isolated, and divided. Unity and appreciation for diversity of backgrounds, features, ideas, talents, traditions, expression, etc. needs to be celebrated and promoted. Join us in the name of unity, charity and good times.” said Dr. Micah E. Johnson.
Later this month their concert and community event will promote unity amongst people of all colors in the local town.
The “Best of Both Worlds” concert takes place on April 28 at 10:00 pm at the Wooly in Gainesville.
