The Weeknd Shows His Knowledge of Art With New Line Designed By Futura

Toronto singer The Weeknd and New York City graffiti legend Futura are linking up once again, to merge the worlds of music, fashion and hip-hop.
The pair have launched a limited-edition XO artist capsule collection, which is inspired by New York City, where Futura cut his teeth as a burgeoning artist alongside famed artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Julian Schnabel.
The new collection is the latest between Futura and the weekend, who have already drawn to other Collections inspired by the Fashions of Toronto and Los Angeles.
The Weeknd x Futura 2000: XO Artist Capsule Collection is only available via Concepts NYC.
Take a look at the collection, along side some facts about the graffiti legend The Weeknd decided to partner with.

Futura Has Been a Legend Since the 1970’s

A pioneer when graffiti met contemporary art, Futura (American, b. 1955), alias of Leonard McGurr was known as early as the seventies for his radical approach in the street, introducing abstraction to an entirely letter-based discipline.

Futura Blew Up In the 1980’s

His work caught the attention in the 1980s, and Futura (then Futura 2000) found himself part of a wider art movement that included the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Julian Schnabel. Entirely self-taught in what he calls “the subway school.”

Futura’s In Good Company

Futura has been compared to Kandinsky and Klee for his mastery of color, movement and line; and friends Basquiat, Kenny Scharf and Rammellzee for his progressiveness and of-the-moment relevance.

Futura is Still Going Strong

Insight and proficiency have kept him relevant for 40+ years with no signs of slowing down, and successors have yet to match Futura’s impossibly thin aerosol lines.
