When Dr. Dre left Death Row Records to start Aftermath Entertainment, he was unsure of what direction to take his music.
That all changed one evening, when Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine asked Dr. Dre to come to his basement for a listening session.
One of Jimmy’s interns had grabbed a cassette tape from Eminem, after watching him destroy another rapper in a battle during The Rap Olympics.
Jimmy took the tape, and brought it to Dr. Dre, who was having difficulty shoring up talent on his label.
“I was really down then I got all that I got all the way to the end of the rap Olympics and lost,” Eminem recalled. “This kid came up to me and he was like hey man can I get one of your tapes.”
Although Eminem was prepared for his big break, he didn’t expect it to come so fast, or so big.
“Holy shit, this is Jimmy Iovine’s office. Holy shit Dr. Dre just walked in. Holy shit, I just shit myself. I’m pissing myself now, thinking about it.”
